There exists two main varieties of Neolamprologus sexfasciatus , the so-called golden morph from the northern part of its distribution range and the "blue" one in the southern area. The golden form comprises a lemon-yellow overall hue, which more or less extend to most parts of the body, while the southern form exhibits a blue and white pattern quite similar to that of Neolamprologus tretocephalus (though with an additional vertical bar), which is similar, either by fortuitous convergence or by mimicry, to Cyphotilapia. According to Konings (1998), gold-and-blue individuals are found in some locations, for example from Kapampa to Livua, on the western coast, where the fishes show a yellow dorsal and bluish body. Konings also observed mixed pairs (blue male and gold females) at Cape Mpimbwe, suggesting that coloration may change according to the mood (or perhaps to the ecological conditions). Given these intermediates as well as the absence of a distinctive feature other than yellow hue, the blue and golden form cannot be considered as distinct species (at most as subspecies), despite the apparent differences in requirements for their breeding in aquarium. Anyway, considering the type locality (M'toto, in the Democratic Republic of Congo), it is the golden form which corresponds to the nominate Neolamprologus sexfasciatus .
du tänker på "Yellow Spotfin"? den hittade jag inget om i Ad anteckningar, kanske skulle jag fråga honom om den också...
