Hi Matt,I've been busy with S.daemon for the last 10 years or so. In my opinion, these things are important if you want to have succes with them long term;- if possible, keep them on their own,or at least not with species that can dominate them. They have to be the dominant fish in the tank.Small dither fish, like tetra's and catfish are ok. I also advise(but this obviously depends on tank size) not to keep too many males,as this will give extra stress in a group.- you probably already know, but they like it hot and soft. I keep mine on Gh 1-2, Kh 0,5-1,conductivity 100-150µS,Ph 6-6.5,temperature 28°-29° Celsius. Waterchanges 35-40% every 7-10 days. I use 90-95% RO water which is collected in a 50 gallon VAT,in there is also some peat and oak-beech leaves(in a fine mesh bag)in it, and to add some extra colour I use some " Rooibos" tea(this plant comes from South Africa and does not belong to the family of tea plants, but contains good amounts of calcium, magnesium and iron, and the "tea" you can brew from it gives a nice, quite long lasting reddish-brown "blackwater" effect, for more info look on Google)I once had(with another pair in the past) wrigglers from daemon(Ph then was 4.5!) but one day before free swimming all was gone...I never knew why...- Food: a good amount of vegetable matter is important,as they are substratum-detritus sifters by nature, and detritus contains lots of plant matter/items. I do this by giving them spirulina based flakes,or sticks(pre soaked) which are designed for Malawi's or Tangs(like Tropheus),for example "Novo Rift" from JBL. Hikari Excel is also fine. Sometimes they also get "normal" flakes and oatmeal flakes.Frozen food they get twice a week, mainly white(=glassworms),and black mosquito larvae. Also mysis and small krill. I never give bloodworms anymore,as they are usually collected from contaminated waters(at least here in Europe) and thus have a bad reputation for causing bloat/internal bacterial infections. During the summer months they also get 1-2 times/week live daphnia.I usually feed them twice a day,for 3 or 4 days in a row,and then one day nothing. There are more fish in aquaria that get problems from overfeeding than the opposite. In the wild, they have to sift and look for a bit of food the whole day.- The 2 biggest problems with daemon are HITH or HLLE and "neotropical" bloat. I think this is usually caused by stress, coming from too much and too rich in protein foods, bad waterparameters(not soft enough, not clean enough, temperature too low...) or tankmates that are not suited to keep with daemon and dominate them. This is how I do it,but with Satanoperca's,you can learn more every day. I also lost fish in the past, unfortunately. This group of five have been doing well for the past 16 months now and I hope it stays that way.Hope this helped you a bit...Patrick
